Kohlrabi belongs to the brassica family and resembles sputnik. Its nutty flavour and delicious smell offer you a real treat if you like your greens. It thrives where turnips and swedes fail because it is more resistant to drought than other brassicas.

You can sow the green varieties from mid-spring to mid-summer. On the other hand, you can plant the purple varieties from mid-summer.

Sowing Kohlrabi

  • Late February to early March is the best time to sow the seeds in warmer areas.
  • Choose a fertile, light and draining free soil to create a firm seedbed.
  • Ensure the rows 12 inches apart from Late February to early March
  • Sow the seeds to a depth of 0.5 inches
  • Sow the seeds every three weeks
  • Sow the early crop in modules in the cooler areas with heavy clay. Besides, transplant the plants, sown in colder regions, when they are 2 inches long.

Growing Kohlrabi

  • Thin out the seedlings such that there is only one seedling in every 6 inches. Then, you can thin out the seedlings on the appearance of the first true leave.
  • Water the plants regularly.
  • Keep the soil weed-free
  • Keep the soil moist.
  • Cover the plants with fleece or net to protect them from cabbage root fly and birds.

Harvesting Kohlrabi

So, now the question is, when should you harvest the Kohlrabi. Well, the right time to harvest them is when they reach the size of a tennis ball or golf ball. Never allow them to grow longer than that because they will lose their tenderness and flavour.

You can start harvesting the plant from May and can harvest throughout November. You can also eat the leaves of the plant.

The green varieties provide a crop in summer. On the other hand, purple types are ready to harvest in autumn.

Common problems

Cabbage root fly

It primarily affects the seedlings. The white larvae of cabbage root fly, when they reach 2 inches, eat the roots. As a result,

  • The growth of the plants get affected
  • The plant will wilt or die.

It is most damaging for the seedlings.

Use horticulture fleece and insect-free netting over the crop

Flea beetle

It creates holes in leaves and turns the infected area brown. It mainly damages the seedlings.

  • Keep the soil moist
  • Cover the plants with fleece
  • Water the plants when you have applied the nitrogen-rich fertilizer

The plants with clubroot show the following symptoms:

  • Roots become distorted and swollen
  • Leaves become pale yellow

Even the death of the plant may also occur with this disease.

  • Add lime to the soil. Lime will make the soil alkaline.
  • Improve drainage
  • Avoid growing the plant in affected soil.
