If We Lost Everything Today (cont.)

If We Lost Everything Today (cont.)

As a reminder our theme for May is what we would do if we lost everything today – how would we get back on our feet and carry on paying the mortgage etc.?

You see – the smart way is to start cooking up something before it happens – before your fuel, energy and fuel bills get way out of hand. You don’t wait for it to happen then sit around wringing your hands. That’s planning to lose, not planning to win!

We also continue with the plants theme, with some interesting facts, and rather clever ways to make money from the venture.

I receive regular reports from Trends, which give an insight as to what is happening in the world.

In their recent reports, they mention two types of plants that are booming, and which you could perhaps specialize in.

The first is the growth in interest in herbs.

Take a look:

Hhmm, ‘what if’. What if you specialized in herbs? Could you make money from them?

Absolutely, and a lot of it. Herbs are easy to grow, easy to take cuttings from and easy to sell.

I grow herbs all the time. Karen is a fantastic cook, and I like to delight her with different varieties of herbs, which I get from seedmegastore.co.uk

Take a look – I don’t just see seeds – I smell the money!

By the way – the simple reason that you might want to settle on herbs as an income source is that unlike other plants, you can grow them all year round.

Search for basil for example I can buy over 3000 seeds for less than a fiver, and I can buy all those specialist varieties. So my Etsy and eBay store would be filled with these, and I would become known as the herb specialist. The secret would be good colourful packaging.

Hold on –that’s no good as I don’t have a colour printer, etc., etc.

Ok – so what if you went sepia, or vintage black and white?

Pricing – I would put them in packs of say 50 seeds.  This means getting 60 packs out of the 3000 seeds, and I sell them at £1.99 per pack, not inc p&p. That’s about £100 PROFIT  on one variety, taking into account £5 for the seeds, and say 25p for the packaging, etc.

What if – what if you offered a special bundle, with say 3 varieties of seeds in each bundle? Simply reduce the number of seeds in a pack, to say 30 seeds, and people will snap up these unknown varieties to try out.

That’s just for seeds. How about you grow the herbs and sell them at local events, car boots etc.?

Now, stretch your mind. Who else would want beautiful pots of herbs to pick from for culinary or medicinal use? Let’s explore culinary use. Of course – chefs in hotels and restaurants would perhaps like fresh herbs weekly. Cooks like Karen might snap up your herb delivery following the leaflet that you put through the door, or from the advert on nextdoor.co.uk

Guys – this is so easy it’s ridiculous. Anyone can do either or both ideas that we have explored.

What if?

What if you could get this book branded with your own name, to give out with each order of herbs? All you have to do is ask…and this would put you head and shoulders above every other herb seller, don’t you think?

Now take a look at this before we leave the plant world. There are two other areas to explore.

First of all, do you like indoor plants? They are set to boom. Check out the article from Trends:

…and do some ‘what if’s’ on that idea.

Last of all, you may have heard of microgreens.

This is another fascinating subject and one that I have explored in some detail. It is more for commercial growers, but you can do it at home on a small scale too. We use microgreens all the time for decoration of salads, etc., and in things like smoothies for a great nutritional boost.

That’s it for today. Think about these ideas. Do some ‘what if’s’ on them. Start to get excited about the possibilities that surround you, instead of drifting along in the doldrums. There are so many ways to make extra money, and turn them into full-time profitable ventures. And hopefully, our enthusiasm and zest for life will rub off on you along the way. Above all else though, do something with the information, or my time and energy will all be wasted.

Oh – if you ever get hungry, check out the book that I put on Amazon called ’99 Edible Flowers – Eat Your Way Through your Garden’. You never need to go hungry! (John Buxton is my pen name)
