Basil Rubin

Basil Rubin: Ocimum basilicum

Apart from being a herb, the striking purple colour of the leaves makes this plant look good amongst your flowers too. It tastes a little like cloves.

When cooked, the leaves turn from purple to green, as if by magic.

Grows to a height of 24″ – 36″ tall (60cm  – 90cm).

Sowing Time: February Onwards.

How to sow: Sow the seeds from February onwards 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in seed compost. Germination normally takes between 10 days to 2 weeks at 15-18C.

Growing Instructions: Transplant seedlings when they are big enough to handle into 3″ pots, for growing on. You can keep them in pots for the kitchen windowsill or plant out in the warmer weather.

Check out Farmgirlfare for information on how to use it in your cooking, etc.
